The attacking midfielder played a pivotal role in Mġarr’s unforgettable season as the Greens secured an unprecedented treble for the club – winning the Assikura Women’s League, the Assikura Women’s Knock-Out and the Jubilee Cup.
The league triumph was made even sweeter by the manner in which it was achieved, with Mġarr completing the campaign unbeaten.
Carella, who scored nine league goals throughout the season, was one of the standout performers week after week.
Speaking after collecting the prestigious individual honour, Carella admitted the recognition came as a surprise after a season in which the team’s objectives always came first.
“This award means a lot to me,” Carella told the Times of Malta.
“I worked a lot this season, but winning personal accolades was never really on my mind. I was focused only on the club’s achievements. Winning the league was already enough for me, but then we also won three trophies, adding to last year’s knock-out success too. It was overwhelming.”
Mġarr’s success did not come without adversity. Injuries throughout the campaign threatened to derail their momentum at various stages, yet the squad continued to show resilience and consistency to maintain their unbeaten run until the very end.
“Winning the league is difficult to describe because we went through many challenges,” Carella explained.
“We had plenty of injuries during the season, but we remained hungry, motivated and determined. We kept believing in ourselves and eventually managed to win the league unbeaten.”
Carella also underlined her importance in decisive moments. The Maltese international found the net in the domestic cup final against Birkirkara, once again demonstrating her ability to deliver on the biggest stage.
The Player of the Year award now adds another milestone to what has already been the most memorable season of her career, but both Carella and Mġarr are already looking ahead to an exciting new challenge.
The Greens are preparing for their first-ever appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers, marking another historic chapter for the club. While they are still awaiting their opponents for the first qualifying round, anticipation is already building within the squad.
“Playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League is an important milestone for the club and for myself personally,” Carella said.
“We want to continue making history just like the Maltese clubs who represented the country before us. Our aim is to perform well in Europe and represent the club in the best possible way.”
Still only at the beginning of what promises to be an exciting career, Carella is also expected to remain a key figure for the Malta women’s national team in the years ahead.
