Joseph Muscat confirmed as Malta Premier League chairman

Joseph Muscat has been reconfirmed as chairman of the Malta Premier League after the football body held its annual general meeting on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Dr Muscat received a secret vote of confidence of 12 votes in favour and zero against to serve a second term as Malta Premier League chairman.

Dr Muscat had been elected as MPL chairman for the first time in June 2022, and since his appointment, the Maltese top-flight championship underwent a major revamp, with the introduction of a new league format and, more importantly, greater financial support for top-flight clubs.

During the meeting, it was announced that the Malta Premier League had doubled its surplus to €475,000 for the 2025-26 season.

Victor Cassar, of Ħamrun Spartans, and Floriana FC president Johann Said were elected to fill the seats on the MFA Executive Board vacated by Keith Perry and Michael Valenzia.

During the AGM it was announced that in just two years of operation, the MPL’s revenue has grown from €60,000 to just below a record amount of €1 million.

In a statement, the Malta Premier League extends its sincere gratitude to its commercial partners for their continued trust and support.

The AGM approved the calendar for the 2026-27 season which kicks off on Friday, August 14, with draws and sequence for the first eleven Match Weeks in the Opening Round – League Phase, scheduled for Monday, July 20.
