Floriana FC to sue former midfielder M’Mombwa

Floriana FC accused their former player of ignoring a contract extension he had agreed to last February, and confirmed that they will seek legal action.

Floriana FC will be suing former midfielder Charles M’Mombwa for breaching his contract after the Tanzania international completed a move to Premier League rivals Żabbar St Patrick.

On Wednesday, Żabbar St Patrick announced that they sealed the transfer of M’Mmobwa for the upcoming season.

However, the announcement was shortly followed by a statement from Floriana FC, who accused their former player of ignoring a contract extension he had agreed to last February, and confirmed that they will seek legal action.

“Floriana FC confirms that Charles M’Mombwa remains under a valid and binding employment agreement with the Club, which remains in full force and effect,” Floriana FC said in reaction to the player’s request to the MFA to seek his release from the club.

“The club further notes that the player expressly acknowledged and accepted a contractual extension earlier this year, which extension was duly registered and confirmed by the Malta Football Association in February 2026.

“This development is particularly concerning given that the player had already reported for pre-season training, actively participated in the club’s preparation for the upcoming season, and featured in friendly matches organised by the club.”

Floriana said that they consider the player’s actions to constitute a ‘clear, deliberate and unjustified breach of his contractual obligations’.

“The club has also identified the involvement of another club, which appears to have induced the player to disregard his contractual obligations towards Floriana Football Club,” the statement added.

“Furthermore, the club has identified the involvement of a third party who appears to have coordinated, facilitated, and encouraged this blatant breach of contract.”

The Premier League club said it considers the conduct of this third party to be particularly serious and will formally report the matter to the relevant authorities and governing bodies.

“The club will pursue all remedies available to it against the player, any club found to have induced the breach of contract, and any third party involved before the Malta Football Association, FIFA, the relevant sporting and disciplinary bodies, and, where necessary, the domestic courts,” the statement said.
