Fighting cancer with every kilometre: The heart, sweat, and science behind the ALIVE 2026 Cycling Challenge

Since its inception in 2013, ALIVE has matured into one of Malta’s most passionate, transparent, and impactful voluntary organisations, dedicated entirely to advancing local cancer research.

Malta records over 2,500 new cancer cases every single year, with the disease remaining one of the nation’s leading causes of mortality — responsible for approximately one in every four deaths across our islands.

Faced with these sobering statistics, the ALIVE Charity Foundation has spent more than a decade turning collective grief and hope into tangible medical progress.

Since its inception in 2013, ALIVE has matured into one of Malta’s most passionate, transparent, and impactful voluntary organisations, dedicated entirely to advancing local cancer research.

The scope of this vital research is comprehensive, spanning critical areas such as advancing early detection methods, better understanding epidemiological statistics, and pursuing an ultimate cure.

Furthermore, the funding may aid scientists in improving diagnostic tests, developing more effective medications, and drastically reducing the debilitating side effects of ongoing treatments.

To date, the foundation has donated an extraordinary €1.1 million to the Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT) of the University of Malta.

Because the foundation operates with zero corporate overheads and is run completely by altruistic volunteers who dedicate countless hours of their free time, 100% of all public donations — net only of direct challenge costs — are channelled directly into the local University’s laboratories.

Retaining Local Talent: Where Your Donations Go

A common question posed to the foundation is whether a small nation like Malta can truly find a cure. The reality is that scientific breakthrough is a global, collaborative jigsaw puzzle.

Malta regularly shares a pool of ideas and research data with world-renowned universities. By equipping the University of Malta with top-tier apparatus and funding highly ranked researchers, ALIVE ensures that brilliant local scientific talent is retained right here on Maltese soil instead of being forced abroad.

To date, public and corporate generosity has systematically funded vital research and PhD tracks across a diverse spectrum of oncology:

Type of Cancer ResearchFunds AllocatedNumber of Projects / PhDs
Breast Cancer Research€262,0005
Colorectal Cancer Research€180,0004
Brain Cancer Research€120,0002
Skin Cancer Research€117,0002
Nerve Cancer Research€80,0001

Lung Cancer Research€70,0001
Leukemia Cancer Research€28,0001

Note: Portions of the funds raised during the 2024 and 2025 campaigns are currently being processed and are yet to be formally allocated to upcoming peer-reviewed projects.

The ALIVE 2026 Challenge: 1,100 km Across Central Europe

The primary engine powering these massive donations is the annual ALIVE Cycling Challenge for Cancer Research. This year’s edition, ALIVE2026, will see 35 cyclist volunteers from all walks of Maltese society push their minds and bodies to the absolute limit.

  • The Gruelling Route: The team will cover a staggering 1,100 km over just 6 days, charting an exhausting course through Central Europe from Bratislava to Budapest, Zagreb, and finally Vienna.
  • The Timeline: The challenge takes place from 28 June to 3 July.
  • The Preparation: This is not a casual ride. The team commenced a gruesome 17-week intensive training regimen on 16 February, clocking roughly 5,000 km in almost daily sessions while simultaneously balancing full-time jobs, family duties, and fundraising obligations.

The physical reality of the challenge itself is daunting. Cyclists will ride for hours without support vehicles driving directly alongside them, navigating unpredictable European weather, possible harsh terrain, unexpected detours, and psychological isolation. Designated pit-stops are placed 50 km apart—a distance longer than travelling from the southern tip of Marsaxlokk to the furthest coast of Gozo. The riders must reach these checkpoints within a strict 2.5-hour window, making each leg both a race against the clock and a test of sheer survival.

Turning Helplessness into Hope

The application of riders is launched via an open call every October/November, bringing together seasoned athletes and courageous first-timers alike.

What unites them is a deeply personal, often painful motivation. Some riders are cancer survivors themselves, while others have watched a parent, child, partner, or close friend battle the disease—some celebrating recovery, others mourning a devastating loss.

For these individuals, joining the ALIVE Cycling Challenge for Cancer is a way to actively transform feelings of absolute helplessness into something profoundly constructive.

As training intensified, fatigue and doubt inevitably creep in, particularly during the lonely after-work rides and exhausting weekend training camps in Sicily.

The mental peak of the crisis often hits on Day 2 of the challenge, when the initial adrenaline has completely worn off and the realization sets in that there are still 900 km left to peddle.

Yet, the riders’ mindset remains unyielding. When the body screams to quit, a simple truth keeps the wheels turning: while a cyclist has the choice to slow down or stop, cancer patients do not have that luxury.

That perspective, combined with a fierce sense of responsibility toward the donors who placed trust in them, becomes the ultimate fuel that carries the team through the darkest miles.

An undertaking of this magnitude is only possible through collective solidarity. The ALIVE Charity Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to every single donor who has contributed toward this year’s campaign.

We are immensely grateful to our long-standing corporate partners who have stood by our side for a number of years, as well as the new donors who have stepped up to join our mission for the first time.

A special note of thanks goes to our major supporting partners, Visit Malta and Transport Malta, whose vital backing anchors this year’s logistics. Finally, our deepest appreciation goes out to every single individual who generously left a donation — your personal contributions are the lifeblood of this research.
