Athletics Malta Challenge Three meet to be held behind closed doors

The Malta Amateur Athletics Association (MAAA) announced that Saturday’s Challenge Three meeting will be held behind closed doors at the Matthew Micallef St John Stadium in Marsa.

The decision was taken following the issue of a Legal Notice by the Health Authorities that bans spectators from sporting events.

“Local developments related to the current spread of COVID 19 are becoming ever-more a cause of concern,” the MAAA said in a statement.

“Not least to Sport and the holding of active competition. On Saturday, 8 August 2020, following the holding of the National Championships for the younger categories, the Malta Amateur Athletics Association will be taking extra precautions in line with the provisions contained in Legal Notice 322 of 2020.

“The MAAA, have taken the hard decision to close its doors to spectators during tomorrow’s final Challenge 3 event as well as during training.

“Coaches and athletes will be permitted. However, must observe social distancing and the wearing of face masks, as advocated by the Health authorities and required by law.”

The MAAA warned that if these precautionary measures are not followed it will not hesitate to cancel its events.

“Should it become apparent that precautionary measures are not being taken, there will not be any hesitation to cancel the competition this Saturday there and then, with action to follow regarding the planned National Championships on August 22 and 23.

“We trust you understand, that this decision was taken with heavy hearts,” the MAAA concluded.
