Richard Schulteis and his sister Antonia continued to impress in the international sailing scene when the young Maltese siblings are currently holding the top two positions in the 29er class at the Fraglia Della Vela Riva in Lake Garda in Italy.
The Malta Young Sailors Club duo came into the event on the back of an impressive summer of sailing which saw Richard Schulteis taking gold in several competitions, most notably the Euro Cup in Kiel, Germany.
This week, Richard Schulteis and his sister Antonia are in action in the 29er class that has seen the participation of 61 teams from all over Europe in the competition.
Richard Schulteis, who is partnered by Max Korner, has enjoyed a perfect start to the competition after winning two of the opening four regattas while also placing third in the fourth race to lead the standings with a net score of 5.0.
Antonia Schulteis is trying to keep up the pressure on her brother when she teamed up with Ole Ulrich to finish the first day of competition in second place with a net score of 11.0.
Slovenia’s Rok Verderber and Daniel Cante are in third place with 16.0 points.
The event continues today with another four regattas.
Meanwhile, another Malta Youngs Sailing Club sailor that caught the eye with an impressive display was Nico Drescher who placed 19th overall in the Optimist Class in the European Championships that were held in Slovenia.
Drescher finished with a net score of 59 points in a competition that was halted a day earlier due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Drescher’s result takes further significance when one considers that the Maltese sailor managed a top-20 position in the continental championship that attracted the participation of 156 sailors.
