Former Hibs striker Jimmy Mizzi dies, aged 79

Former Hibernians striker Jimmy Mizzi passed away overnight, the Premier League club announced in a statement.

The 79-year-old was regarded as one of the best forwards in the history of Hibernians FC.

In 1961, Mizzi played a key role in helping the Paolites winning their first ever league championship.

After a very tight title race with Valletta, a head to head match was played on May 28. The Paolites won 2-1 with Mizzi scoring both goals and led the way for the Paolites who secured their maiden title crown.

In season 1961-62, Hibernians won the Schembri Shield, the Cassar Cup and the FA Trophy and again Mizzi played a key role behind these successes.

In fact, the prolific forward netted the winner in the Cassar Cup final against Sliema Wanderers.

While, in the FA Trophy final against Valletta he forced City’s goalkeeper Tommy Taylor commit an own goal in an attempt to keep out his fierce drive.

Mizzi was also part of the Hibernians team that played against Atletico Madrid in the Cup Winners Cup at the Empire Stadium on November 7, 1962.

The match finished in a 1-0 win for the Spanish giants.
