Kijan Sultana wins the Queensland Junior Championships

Young Maltese player is the top-ranked U-17 player in Queensland

Kijan Sultana has won the 2020 Queensland Junior Championships that was held in Brisbane, Australia.

The event had over 75 participants and it was one of the few events that was able to take place this year due to COVID-19.

The 16-year old Maltese player, who is under the guidance of Brad Hindle Deguara, took part in the Under 17 boys competition and successfully won the title.

Kijan Sultana eased his way into the competition with a very comfortable 3-0 win over Matthew West 11-1 11-2 11-2.

Sultana was then matched up against Matthew Brazier from Mackay, the Maltese junior played very well to come out with a comfortable win once again in three straight games, 11-2, 11-3, 11-6.

In the final, Kijan played against one of the top Queensland juniors, Luke Eyles from Brisbane.

Eyles was playing in his home club and had the crowd behind him, this helped gain a two-game lead over Kijan, but Sultana remained composed and stepped up his game to win the next two games take the game into a decider.

Here, Sultana performed brilliantly in the last game and overpowered his opponent with commendable stamina and intelligent tactical play, to claim the U17 Boys Queensland Junior title.

The Maltese youngster is currently living and competing in Brisbane, Australia where he is pursuing a professional squash program at the Bradley Hindle Art of Squash Academy.

Sultana is currently ranked #1 in the Queensland Under 17 Boys rankings and top 5 in the Australia under 17 rankings.

This result will certainly help him maintain and improve his position.

Sultana is now looking forward to the Australian Junior Championships in December where he is looking to win another gold medal.

The young Maltese player is also excited for next year’s European Team Championships where he will form part of the Maltese Men’s National Team.

Sultana  is supported by the Malta Sport Scholarships Scheme, Maltese Olympic Committee , Sports Malta and Malta Squash .
