Veteran Gżira midfielder Andrew Cohen is planning to hang up his boots at the end of the season to focus on a coaching career.
Speaking during an interview on the club’s facebook page, Cohen said that it would be a fitting end to his career if he would manage to help his current club win their first major honour.
“I have one big wish in my career, to help Gżira United win their first major trophy in Maltese football,” the former Hibernians player said.
“Surely it would be a fitting way to finish the season and retire from a football player and start concentrating on a coaching career. So far, I have made 502 appearances in the Premier League and although we have a long squad with several talented young and experienced players I will only remain motivated to be ready to help the team every time the coach wants me to go on the pitch.”
Cohen paid tribute to current Gżira United coach Darren Abdilla for paving the way for him to a coaching career.
“When I came here, Darren Abdilla had promised me that he would involve with the coaching set-up and for the past three years and a half I have been acting also as assistant coach,” Cohen said.
“With Darren I have learnt a lot and I also had a great experience with the other coaches at the club, namely Jesmond Zerafa, Paul Zammit and Giovanni Tedesco.
“My goal is to become the best coach I can be and surely if I enjoy half of the success I achieved during my playing career, I will certainly be very happy.”
