Watch: Maltese abroad: Falzon, Lecuyer on the board for Riders

Aaron Falzon

British Basketball League (BBL) side Leicester Riders’ newest signing Aaron Falzon showed off his ability to score three-pointers as he got his first during his debut and three more in his second game for the team. Riders affiliate club Loughborough Riders’ Sasha Lecuyer added to her points tally in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) Division 1 championship. This week, the Times of Malta Sportsdesk looks at Falzon, Lecuyer and others plying their trade overseas in another segment of ‘Maltese Abroad’.

Aaron Falzon, who joined the Leicester Riders on Thursday had said “the first thing I do, and a lot of people know, is I shoot threes and I shoot them pretty well” in his first interview with the club. The Malta international stayed true to his word when he scored his first Riders three-ball on Saturday as the Riders beat the Surrey Scorchers 84-72.

Falzon, who came off the bench in his first game and played close to nine minutes as he eases into the team, grabbed three boards and also assisted one basket.

The Malta international then got double digits as a starter for the Leicester Riders in the BBL Cup later on Monday as they fell 61-87 to Sheffield Sharks.

This time, he got another set of threes to reach a points tally of 16, as well as three assists and six rebounds within around 24 minutes.

Sasha Lecuyer

Sasha Lecuyer, who also came off the bench for Loughborough Riders against the Cardiff Met Archers, scored eight points, grabbed two rebounds and one assist in close to 22 minutes last Saturday. The side went on to win 88-71 to start a second-game winning streak.

An individual move from Sasha Lecuyer for two points against Cardiff Met Archers.

While this was Lecuyer’s highest scoring game so far, she was also productive in defense – She grabbed two boards, a block and three steals.
