Watch: Paolo Rossi, a gentleman and a great player – Pietro Ghedin

Pietro Ghedin described the late Paolo Rossi as a wonderful person before being a great player.

The former Malta coach joined the Times of Malta Sports Desk in a discussion about the former Italy forward who passed away earlier this week.

Rossi, 64, is famous for his exploit during the 1982 World Cup with his famous goals against Brazil, Argentina and Poland en route to the final against West Germany.

Against the Germans, Rossi had opened the score for the Azzurri as he propelled them to a 3-1 win to help Italy claim their third world title.

At club level, Rossi contributed to the Juventus’ triumphs in the 1982 and 1984 Serie A titles, the 1984 UEFA Super Cup and the 1985 European Cup.

Prior to his stint with the Bianconeri, Rossi featured for Como and Lanerossi Vicenza, where he faced Ghedin twice.

Their first meeting was on May 16, 1976 when both Rossi and Ghedin came on as second-half substitutes for Como and Lazio respectively.

However, it was the second encounter that shed light on Rossi’s offensive prowess when against Ghedin’s Lazio, he netted his first hat-trick for Vicenza in a 3-1 victory on March 12, 1978.

That year, Rossi’s goal helped the Lanerossi to finish second in the Serie A.
