Żejtun Corinthians slam referee decisions during recent matches

Newly promoted side Żejtun Corinthians have slammed a number of refereeing decisions taken by Malcolm Spiteri in the side’s narrow 2-1 loss to Valletta on Monday at the Centenary Stadium, as well as by other referees in previous matches against Sirens FC and Lija Athletic.

In two different statements, which they have formulated as a protest to the Malta FA, the club expressed its disappointment with regards to events which they alleged “gave the other team an advantage”.

“Yesterday we had a clear penalty and two goals annulled for no reason,” one of the statements on Tuesday read.

“It’s not right that any team should be penalised like this and the referee should shoulder the responsibility because the sacrifices the members of the clubs’ committees make are great.”

This follows another statement, an open letter to the Board of Control and Discipline regarding their matches against Sirens FC and Lija Athletic where they alleged that the referee “changed the match report” for the Lija game and that this is something which cannot happen.

 “This was done to give an advantage to the other team and put ours in a disadvantageous position,” the club said.

As for the Sirens game, they alleged that former Sirens FC President Censu Galea had been part of the disciplinary board and insisted he should have never been involved when there were Sirens in the picture.

“For these reasons, we demand that due to this wrongdoing, the cases involving our players and members are relieved from all accusations in regards these irregularities.

Such allegations have already been issued by fellow promoted side Lija Athletic who last week protested the red card of Juan Cruz Gill in the same match against Żejtun – Such decision eventually overturned by the Malta FA after review.
