Floriana FC have appointed John Buttigieg as their new first-team coach.
The former Malta coach was given the reins of the team following the resignation of Italian coach Vincenzo Potenza earlier this week.
For Buttigieg this appointment is a return to the cub with who he spent a significant part of his playing career and where he won several trophies.
In fact, with Floriana Buttigieg made 213 appearances during the 1990s, helping the team to win all the honours in Maltese football, namely the Premier League, 2 FA Trophies and 1 Super Cup.
“In his first comments after putting pen to paper with the club, John Buttigieg stated that it is a great privilege for him to coach this club and expressed full faith in moving the club forward in the right direction and with the undisputed qualities of the current team, there is reason to be optimistic for this new challenge,” Floriana FC said in a statement.
“On behalf of Floriana FC we would like to give a warm welcome back to John Buttigieg at our club and we wish him the best of luck for his career as a Coach of the Greens.”
As a coach, John Buttigieg started his career with Birkirkara FC in season 2007-08 season winning the F.A Trophy in his first season with the Stripes.
In 2009, the former Floriana FC captain was appointed as Maltese National Coach as he occupied the prestigious post until October 2011. Most recently, John Buttigieg had other spells as a coach of Sliema Wanderers F.C (June 2016 – January 2019) and Birkirkara F.C (April 2019 – September 2019).
