Performance analysis is becoming the latest trend in the world of football.
Clubs are starting to understand the importance of assessing performances during training sessions and on matchdays in order to optimize decision-making, performance and provide further support to the coaching staff as they strive for better results.
Mainly, performance analysis would include tactical and technical asssessment, and the gathering of data and statistics among other aspects.
Maltese football is starting to catch up with this trend slowly, with Sliema Wanderers becoming one of the first clubs in our domestic game to have a professional match analyst in coach Dominic Mahoney.
Mahoney joined Sports Desk, as he describes role within the Premier League club. He points out that it is important to keep constant communication with the coach in order to exchange information and keep following the same path as that creates the foundation for his job.
Nowadays, the Performance analyst has evolved in particular when it comes to data and statistics, where he is required to collect a lot of information which the coaching staff will analyse either to strengthen his team or to study the opponents.
In addition, coach Mahoney stresses out the fact that players are constantly asking for their personalized clips as they seek to assess their weekly performances.
This leads to the Sliema coach to underline the importance of this role and that should match analysis become a bigger trend in the Maltese game, the level of the domestic competitions could increase as teams become more self-conscious about their level of the game.
