His miraculous cure from cancer led to the beatification of Nazju Falzon
Former Malta national team masseur Tony Gambin passed away on Monday.
Gambin enjoyed a long and successful relationship with the Malta Football Association as he served as the national team masseur for 38 years, during which he served his role for 350 international matches.
He also caught the headlines away from the football fields as his miraculous cure from cancer led to the beatification of Nazju Falzon by John Paul II in 2001.
During his spell, Gambin worked with various national team coaches and he was a popular figure in the set-up, particularly in the 1980s when he worked for one of the most successful national teams of all time.
Gambin had been honoured for his services in September 2016, when he was presented with a national team shirt by former Malta Football Association president Norman Darmanin Demajo prior to kick-off for the World Cup qualifier against Scotland.
The Malta FA issued a statement to express its sadness for the death of Gambin.
“We are deeply saddened by the news that Tony Gambin has passed away,” the Malta FA said in a statement.
“For many years, Tony was the masseur of the national senior team, earning the respect and affection of all thanks to his dedication, kindness and great sense of humour. We convey our heartfelt condolences to Tony’s family and friends. Rest in peace Tony.”
After his retirement from the Malta FA, Gambin also served as a physical trainer for the first team of waterpolo side Neptunes.
Neptunes issued a statement to announce the news of Gambin’s passing.
“With deep regret we announce the passing away of Tony Gambin, husband of
Rose Gambin, our first team physical trainer. Our deepest condolences to Rose and her daughters Lisa and Claudette.
“Rest In Peace dear Tony.”
