Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball win National Cup

Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball won its first National Cup ever after beating Flyers in two successive finals, with the identical score of 3-0.

The club has dedicated this achievement to its junior players, who last week were banned from practicing their sport due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Head Coach Leonard Zammit Munro said: “This achievement came in a difficult year for Malta, for the sport and for the team, and in some way compensated for last season, where the team was unbeaten after eight matches but could not be crowned champions.”

Swieqi Phoenix’s Superleague team, as well as its U19, U17 and U15 teams, are all currently unbeaten in their respective leagues this season, even though competitions have been suspended on Wednesday after all organised sport is banned in new COVID-19 regulations.

Club President Orlando Bonnici congratulated the players and coaches, and thanked sponsors Yobetit and EY Malta for their support to the club’s senior teams, as well as the Malta Volleyball Association for ensuring a continuation to official competitions despite these challenging times.
