Pembroke Athleta’s jumper Jeremy Zammit stole the show at the Agropoli Athletics meeting on Sunday when they young athlete shattered the junior national records in the long jump event.
Zammit was one of Maltese athletes that competed in the Agropoli with the support of Athletics Malta, SportMalta and the Maltese Olympic Committee.
Zammit produced a best leap of 7.51 metres that set a new national best in U-18 and U-20 categories while also establishing a new national best in the Under 23 class.
More impressively, Sunday’s result has enabled Zammit to move up to second in the 2021 Under 18 long jump world rankings and first place in this year’s European U-18 list.
For Zammit, this result means that the young jumper has earned automatic qualification for both the Championships of the Small States of Europe as well as the European Under 20 Championships that will be held in Estonia.
Sunday’s result also earns him a berth in the Under 23 European Championships that will be staged in Norway later on this year.
Elsewhere, Ian Paul Grech placed second in the long jump event while Janet Richard also finished in second place in the 200 metres when clocking a time of 25.87 seconds.
Dario Mangion was second in the 1,500 metres when completing the distance in four minutes 07.11 seconds.
Graham Pellegrini and Sean Spiteri clocked a season best time in the 200m race. Pellegrini clocked 22.53 seconds while Spiteri crossed the finish line in 22.64 seconds.
In the women’s long jump, Claire Azzopardi won the competition with a best jump of 5.86m to finish ahead of team-mate Rachela Pace 5.67 metres.
