Maria Farrugia’s Sunderland Ladies promoted to Championship

After having their Championship promotion hopes dashed for two consecutive seasons due to the coronavirus pandemic, Maria Farrugia’s Sunderland Ladies have still managed to reach their objective as they have been granted second-tier football next season by the FA.

Back in March, the FA Women’s National League – the third tier – was declared null and void.

Afterwards, all clubs participating in Tiers three to six of the Women’s Pyramid were permitted to apply for promotion via the Upward Club Movement process.

Sunderland and Watford were the two teams selected from the National League North and National League South respectively and will make up the 12-team Championship in 2021/2022.

Among the teams playing in the Championship will be Bristol City, who dropped from the Women’s Super League, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic and Blackburn.

Prior to this season’s premature end, Sunderland were sitting fifth with 15 points after nine games before domestic action was interrupted due to the lockdown in the United Kingdom.

Malta player Farrugia had scored one goal in six appearances this season as she has nine goals in 31 appearances over three seasons at Sunderland.
