England cancelled a press conference on Saturday ahead of their Euro 2020 opener against Croatia after Denmark star Christian Eriksen collapsed and was revived during his country’s match against Finland.
Inter midfielder Eriksen, a former teammate of England players including Harry Kane at Tottenham, was rushed to hospital after suddenly falling to the turf late in the first half in Copenhagen.
Danish players were in tears as medical staff tried to revive Eriksen with CPR but he was pictured being carried off on a stretcher. The Danish federation later said on Twitter that Eriksen was awake and undergoing tests in hospital.
England manager Gareth Southgate and captain Harry Kane had been due to preview Sunday’s Group D match against Croatia at 19.30.
But the distressing events inb Copenhagen prompted the Football Association to cancel the media briefing.
Apart from Kane, fellow England squad members Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier were also Tottenham team-mates of the Dane.
“Our thoughts this evening are with Christian Eriksen and his family, and all connected with the Danish Football Union,” the FA said in a statement.
England forward Marcus Rashford sent a prayer emoji alongside one of a Danish flag on Twitter, while his international team-mate Raheem Sterling posted: “Thoughts and prayers go out to Christian Eriksen and his family.”
