Haruna Garba rejoins Gżira United but move subject to favourable medical checks

Gżira United have agreed to terms to re-sign Nigerian striker Haruna Garba, however, the deal will only materialise if the towering forward receives positive news from medical checks to be effected on a foot injury that has been hampering him for several months now.

Reports in other sections of the media had said on Friday that the Premier League club had offered a contract to Garba for the upcoming season, and all terms of the deal had been agreed upon by both parties.

However, the Times of Malta can reveal that the deal is subject to a number of medical tests that Garba is expected to undergo in the coming days.

Garba had left the Maroons last summer when he agreed to a move to Hungarian giants Debrecen. Since then, he played in China at SZ Dongwu and during his stint in the Asia he picked up a knee injury that continued to trouble him for several months.

Last March, he moved to Romania where he joined FC Voluntari but his contract was not renewed at the end of the season.

Ħamrun Spartans had also sounded interest in their former Nigerian forward but pulled out of the deal as they were not ready to gamble on Garba’s injury.

In the last few weeks Gżira United were in touch with Garba and offered him a contract. The former Ħamrun Spartans striker agreed terms and put pen to paper on a one-year contract.

However, the Maroons inserted a clause in Garba’s contract that said that they had the right to rescind the player’s contract should he suffer further injury problems.

Garba arrived in Malta this week and is set to undergo an MRI scan, that will shed further light on the entity of his injury.

The Maroons are hopeful of receiving some good news as they are keen to have the powerful Garba leading their forward line this season.

In fact, it is understood that Gżira United could be set to make some changes to their squad after their European commitments and they have received some offers for two of their attacking players which are currently evaluating.

Added to that, Gżira United could also be set to part ways with one their international defenders but so far no decision has been made.
