Former Luxol St Andrews coach Ally Dawson dies

Played for Scottish giants Rangers for 12 years

Former Luxol St Andrews coach Ally Dawson passed away on Monday aged 63.

Dawson will be mostly remembered for his distinguished playing career which saw him capped five times by his country but most importantly for his 12-year spell with Scottish giants Rangers.

After leaving Rangers he moved to Blackburn Rovers, Limerick and Airdrie.

Towards the end of his career, Dawson headed to Malta where he took charge of Luxol St Andrews as player coach. He also had a spell as a player of Dingli Swallows.

Dawson also managed Hamilton Academical and won the Third Division title in 2001.

Rangers said they were “extremely saddened” to hear of Dawson’s passing.

The full-back captained the Ibrox side and won six domestic cups. His international appearances coming in the early 1980s.

A statement from Dawson’s family said: “We will remember the impact he had on our family with affection, inspired by the courage with which he fought his illness and the way he lived his life and grateful that Ally spent his final days with those he loved and who loved him.”

Sad news to hear about such a young man.
Now if only the journalist, the sports editor, would have the courage to remind readers of the most controversial part of his Maltese connection, that is his interview with a Scottish newspaper when he mentioned how corrupt Maltese football was. Rather than launching an investigation the MFA fined him. I may not remember this all correctly but then I am not a journalist and I would hope a journalist would actually do their job and make this part of this story.
