Thirteen athletes from Rush AC and La Salle AC are currently in the Czech Republic where they are competing in the European Kids Athletics Meeting in Brno.
The three-day championships is a huge meeting for young track and field athletes and have attracted the participation of over 1,300 athletes from all over Europe, including Germany, Poland, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Latvia.
The Malta contingent is formed by 13 athletes, seven who are on the books of Rush AC and the other six represent La Salle AC.
Malta has already tasted success in the meeting as so far they have won two bronze medals.
Luca Gerada placed third in the javelin competition when he managed a best throw of 36.11m, which was just 70cm short of the gold medallist.
Gerada then went on to compete in the 60 metres race where he placed fifth in the final when clocking a time of 7.92 seconds… a new personal best.
In the women’s 60 metres race Bianca Shoemake placed third in the final when crossing the finishing line in a new personal best time of 8.09 seconds. Thea Parnis Coleiro was another participant in this race and came in fifth place in 8.15 seconds.
On the other hand, Julian Zarb completed the 1,500 metre race for U-15s in third place when completing the distance in a time of four minutes 24.71 seconds.
Julian Debono was the other Maltese runner in this race and he clocked a time of four minutes 45.87 seconds.
Matthew Galea Soler equalled the U-16 national record in the 60m, currently held by Jeremy Zammit, when he managed to cover the distance in 7.32 seconds to place fifth overall in the final.
