Manchester United’s women’s team are set to head to Malta in the coming days for a short training camp during which they are set to play a friendly against local champions Birkirkara, the Times of Malta can confirm.
The English Women Super League side are understood to be travelling to Malta in the first few days of the New Year to hold a short camp ahead of the restart of the English top-flight championship that will resume on Saturday, January 14.
Manchester United’s trip to Malta is being organised as part of the collaboration agreement that exists between the English giants and Tourism Malta. In fact, last August Tourism Malta and Manchester United extended their partnership agreement that saw Malta being the official destination partner for the next five years.
The Red Devils are expected to spend a few days training in Malta and the highlight of their visit will be on January 6 where they will play a friendly against Birkirkara at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
The English side, led by manager Mark Skinner, have so far enjoyed a very positive campaign in the Women’s Super League as they are currently third in the standings on 22 points after nine matches, five adrift of leaders Chelsea, but have a game in hand.
United have some high-profile players on their squad, most notably English trio Mary Earps, Ella Toone and Alessia Russo who played a pivotal role in England’s march towards the Euro 2022 Championship title on home soil last summer.
They also have on their books Nikita Parris, formerly of Olympique Lyon, Canadian forward Adriana Leon, as well as Spaniard Ona Battle.
This is the second time that the Manchester United women’s team made plans to head to Malta during the new year.
In fact, last year, English side were also planning to come to Malta in the first days of January to face Birkirkara in a friendly.
However, the training camp was called off due to a spike of COVID-19 cases in the United Kingdom that had forced several matches from the various football championship across the country called off.
Twelve months on, the prospect of having the Manchester United women’s team heading to Malta seems almost a certainty and in fact it is expected that the English side’s trip will be officially announced on Friday during a news conference that has been called by Tourism Malta.
