Around 2,000 athletes register for Malta Marathon

Almost 2,000 runners have registered to take part in the 38th Malta Marathon, an event that returns to the calendar three years after its last edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The race, which includes the Half Marathon (21.097 km) and the Marathon (42.195), is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 26.

The race will get under way in Mdina with the finish line, as per tradition, set in Sliema with a 200-metre elevation drop from start to finish.

Also scheduled over the distance of 21.097km is the Malta Endo Walkathon.

A few have been made to the routes that have been used over the past 5 years. The major change to both routes is in Mrieħel.

The routes will no longer pass through the Mriehel Industrial Estate but will follow the old aqueducts all the way to Fleur De Lys and turn back at that point to the Mrieħel bypass.
Once again this year, there are many athletes from all over the world who who have registered for the marathon that has been organised since 1986.

In a statement, the Malta Marathon organisers said that the aim was to set a new record for the men’s race, which has stood since 2013, when Moroccan Mohammed Hajjy stopped the clock at 2:16:06, while the women’s record has stood for 29 years, since British Carolyn Hunter Rowe ran in 2:40:28.

In keeping with the tradition this time too, the Malta Marathon has the Inspire Foundation as its official charity.

Inspire works with children and adults with various disabilities such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism to help them achieve the highest levels of independence.
