GSSE Local Organising Committee to celebrate Team Malta’s achievements

The GSSE Local Organising Committee will be organising an event to celebrate the achievements of Team Malta athletes during the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe which came to an end last weekend.

The activity, named ‘Celebrating Team Malta’, is a free event open to the general public, and will take place on Wednesday, June 14, at Castille Square, Valletta.

Families are invited to attend and greet the athletes part of the Maltese contingent that participated in the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe.

Malta’s success in these Games was immense. Team Malta’s medal tally of 38 gold, 30 silver, and 29 bronze medals saw our country rank first in the overall standings amongst the nine participating countries – an unprecedented feat since the inception of the biennial Games in 1985.

Incidentally, Malta’s best result in previous Games was registered in 2003 when our country hosted these Games for the second time.

That day Malta came in fourth place, with a tally of 44 medals.

“Celebrating Team Malta promises to be a spectacular show, where families can meet their local heroes, the athletes who were part of the GSSE 2023 Maltese contingent,” the GSSE Local Organising Committee said in a statement.

“During the event, those present will be able to relive some of the best moments during the Games.  Popular local artists, Amber and Aidan together with a live band will be performing.

“The two artists performed the official song of these Games, ‘Shine Your Light’. They will be joined on stage by popular DJs Ziggy and David.

“All this will be complemented with projections in the square and a stunning fireworks display.”

The GSSE Local Organising Committee ended their statement by saying that the ‘Celebrating Team Malta’ event is a continued show of support and unity towards Team Malta athletes.

“Although the Games have drawn to a close, the support Malta offered to Team Malta athletes should be an ongoing effort which will motivate them to keep on working towards bigger success for Maltese sport,” the GSSE Local Organising Committee concluded.
