Felix Wetzel climbs ITTF rankings after reaching Last 64 at Czech Republic tournament

Malta’s table tennis player Felix Wetzel has moved up the rankings issued by the International Table Tennis Federation this week.

The German-born player, who won three gold medals for Malta at the 2023 Games of the Small States of Europe, has been bidding to climb the world list in a bid to move closer towards qualification to the Olympic Games.

Wetzel’s performances in the last few weeks have helped him to move up to 255th in the world list.

In June, Wetzel took part in the ITTF tournament in Zagreb but bowed out in the preliminary round.

However, last week he was in action at the WTT Feeder event in Havrov, the Czech Republic.

Here, Wetzel started his campaign in style when he brushed aside Swiss player Pedro Osorio 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-8).

In the next round he was up against his GSSE nemesis, Luke Mladenovic, of Luxembourg.

The match turned out to be a very close tie with Mladenovic winning key points in every set to prevail 3-0 (14-12, 11-9, 11-9).

After this ranking tournament, Wetzel will take part in two other WTT Feeder Events in Olomouc (Czech Republic) and Panagyurishte (Bulgaria).
