Named women’s youth league best player last season
Maltese starlet Sara Saliba will embark in her first experience outside local football as she joins Italian club Pomigliano on a one-year deal.
Saliba, 16, is regarded as one of the best upcoming prospects in the local women’s game.
Despite her young age, Saliba played a crucial role in Birkirkara’s successful title defense during the 2022/2023 campaign with her 11 goals.
The young forward, represented by Tedeschi & Partners, also scored one of Birkirkara’s two goals against Swieqi United which handed the Stripes the Super Cup as well.
At U-21’s level, Saliba found the net on 13 occasions as the Stripes managed to retain the crown in this category.
As a result, the Birkirkara player was named as the Assikura Women’s Youth League Player of the Year by the Malta Football Association.
In January, Saliba was given the nod for Birkirkara in their high-profile match against Manchester United in front of a record crowd for a women’s game hosted in Malta.
At international level, Saliba represented Malta at youth level including with both U-16’s – UEFA Development Tournament – and U-19’s, in the UEFA European Championships qualifications.
In the upcoming campaign, Pomigliano’s first team will be under the new guidance of coach Sossio Finestra.
The club managed to retain their Serie A status after beating Lazio in a two-legged play-out.
Meanwhile, the Primavera team will be under the helm of Salvatore Esposito and will be playing in the Primavera 2 – Girone B alongside Apulia Trani, Ternana, Napoli, Ravenna, Cesena and Sassari Torres.
