Cassar was elected to this role in the margins of the European Athletics Convention held in Vilnius, Lithuania, while Frank Carreras, of Gibraltar, has been confirmed as president of this organisation.

Cassar expressed his enthusiasm to bring renewed vigour to this international organisation with the objective of fostering the cooperative effort between smaller nations to advance their individual development and bolster their collective influence on the international platform.

Meanwhile, Athletics Malta has announced a reorganisation of its internal governance structure in a bid to enhance efficiency in its operations and maximise the skills of the resources available to support the growing needs of this sport.

The structure includes the creation of a Youth Technical Team, a Medical Commission as well as a Road Running Committee to focus on non-stadia events which is one of the fastest-growing areas of the national athletics movement.

Athletics Malta has also announced the setting up of a Safeguarding Policy, which embodies a commitment to create a safe and positive environment for all participants involved in the sport.

“The policy outlines a strict commitment to preventing, reporting, and responding to any concerns in order to ensure that every individual, especially children and vulnerable persons, has the right and equal opportunity to participate in sport free from harm or abuse and without regard to their age, sexual orientation, gender, disability, religion, race, or socio-economic status,” Athletics Malta said.

“Council Member Claudette Caruana will be responsible for the implementation of this policy.”
