BOV Player of the Match: Thaylor Aldama (Gżira United)
Thaylor Aldama scored twice as Gżira United were back to winning ways when they defeated Mosta 3-0.
It was an important win for the Maroons who have managed to leapfrog Mosta and move just two points behind Marsaxlokk and Sliema Wanderers, who are currently sharing third place.
Gżira were clearly the better side throughout the 90 minutes with the Blues being unable to repeat their recent performances which saw them beat Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk and hold leaders Ħamrun Spartans to a draw.
Mosta coach Joseph Grech was unable to field his best formation due to the absence of the suspended Ndubuisi Nnaji and the injured Clayton Failla.
Sasha Cachia, Gustavo Chara, Damian Evans were handed a start along with Ghanian forward Philip Agbado who was making his first appearance for the Blues.
Gżira, on the other hand, had three changes from team which drew with Valletta as David Cassar deputised for Darijan Zarkov while Ewertton Silva and Ryan Essaka were preferred to Jackson Mendoza and Brooklyn Borg.
The Maroons had the first attempt on goal with Thiago Espindola testing goalkeeper David Udoh Akpan with a free-kick from the right on 10 minutes.
Eleven minutes later, Lucas Macula headed over a cross by Ewertton Silva from the right.
Kevin Tulimieri tested goalkeeper David Cassar with a shot from outside the area following a short freekick by Nathan Agius on 37 minutes.
However, in added time, the Maroons forged ahead.
Ewertton Silva served Thaylor on the right and the latter gave goalkeeper Akpan no chance with a fine rising shot.
Two minutes into the second half, Gżira doubled the score.
Off a short corner by Thiaguinho, Ewertton delivered a cross from the right and Gabriel Mentz headed home past Akpan.
The Maroons sealed the points on 76 minutes.
Thiaguinho exchanged the ball with Ewertton and from the Brazilian’s assist from the left, Thaylor beat Akpan with a powerful first-time effort.
Mosta had the opportunity of reducing the gap eleven minutes from time but substitute Jean Paul Farrugia missed a good opportunity hitting wide from inside the area.
