Birkirkara hit four past Mġarr as Hibernians secure big win against Mtarfa

Stripes maintain four-point lead above Swieqi United ahead of league’s final phase.

Birkirkara scored an important win in the Assikura Women’s League second round finale after beating Mġarr United 4-0.

This win kept the Stripes on top with a four-point lead above second-place Swieqi United who also won, clinching the three points against Lija Athletic.

Meanwhile, Hibernians scored 17 in a comfortable win against lowly Mtarfa while Valletta beat San Ġwann in a crucial game in bottom side of the standings.

The Assikura Women’s League returns next week with the third round commitments in which the championship will be divided in two four-team sections.

BIRKIRKARA 4-0 MĠARR

Birkirkara scored two goals in each half to dismantle Mġarr United at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.

Veronique Mifsud opened the score before doubling Birkirkara’s lead just before half-time.

After the change of ends, Marta Grosso grabbed two goals to her name to wrap up the win.

Mġarr, on their part, have now slip to 11 points distant from Birkirkara with nine games left.

For this game, they were coached by Ryan Vella after the departure of coach Michael Mangion according to sources.

Hibernians wrapped up their second round commitments with a large win over Mtarfa, who remain the only side without a single point.

Three players grabbed a hat-trick in Nicole Sciberras, Kayleigh Chetcuti and Nyorah Celeste.

Two players scored a couple each in Yolande Attard and Sarah Urpani.

The other goals were scored by Amy Busuttil, Martina Borg and newcomer Kiley Norkus.

The Paolites were coached by Keith Gouder in his final game as coach of the club as he will continue in an assistant coach position for the remainder of the season with Kenneth Costantino expected to take over.

Swieqi United scored all three goals in the first half to keep their second place ahead of the third round games.

The Owls opened the score through Shona Zammit inside the opening eight minutes before Jessica Dimech scored on the 13th minute.

Zammit wrapped up the win on the 37th minute for Saviour Darmanin’s side.

Miriana Conti grabbed both goals to hand Denis Guerra’s side a victory in Saturday’s late kick-off.
