Valletta FC have signed Portuguese defensive midfielder Goncalo Vieira.
The 25-year-old midfielder arrived in Malta last weekend and in the past few days has been holding talks with the capital club to try and finalise a deal until the end of the season.
Negotiations were finally concluded on Monday so that Vieira becomes Valletta’s third signing during the January transfer window after earlier this month the club had secured the services of Italian goalkeeper Alessandro Guarnone and Serbian defender Milan Jezdimirovic.
Valletta are keen to add reinforcements to their squad as they look to move out of the relegation zone.
Last weekend, the Citizens boosted their hopes with a comfortable 3-0 win over Gudja United that lifted the team to ninth place on the 14-point mark, two clear of the relegation zone.
Valletta have been looking to add a defensive midfielder to their squad as the club has struggled in that department since losing Rowen Muscat to a long-term injury this season.
Vieira spent the majority of his career in Portugal as after coming through the youth ranks of Sporting Lisbon he donned the colours of Montalegre and Sintrese.
In 2021, he moved to Bulgaria where he played for Botev Vratsa before heading to Lithuania where donned the colours of Banga.
The 24-year-old has represented Portugal in all age categories and no doubt his signing could be a great acquisition for the Citizens.
Vieira could make his debut for Valletta in next weekend’s clash against Sirens.
