The Seajet Malta National SB20 Sailing League, hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club as part of the RMYC Winter Series, took to the waters again on January 27 and 28.
The SB20 is the largest single-design keelboat fleet in Malta ever. Racing over both days with flat seas and force three to four winds, saw Outlaw and Sayonara Baby ending Day 1 tied with five points each.
Day Two brought a shift, with Sayonara Baby dominating and securing overall victory through diligent preparation and practice.
Sayonara’s team. spearheaded by Craig Farrugia Vella, enjoy the luxury of a superb light-weight young crew with the likes of Saul Vassallo, Jake Mallia, and Victoria Schulteis.
Team Panda made an impressive push on Day 2, challenging Outlaw right to the end.
The competition across the board was tight, showcasing the increasing skill and enthusiasm within our sailing community.
In the final standings, Sayonara Baby took the first position, ahead of Outlaw and Team Panda finishing third.
These championships are a perfect preparation for the teams who are gearing up for the Europeans due to be held in Malta in the first week of October.
The event saw the SB20 boats in action, likely for the last time with only eight boats, as the fleet is set to more than double with new arrivals expected in March and April.
In a statement, the SB20 Malta said that with the increase in the fleet, interested sailors are encouraged to reach out on sb20malta@gmail.com, to join existing teams and also with opportunities to charter boats in the near future highlighting the bright prospects ahead.
