Record entry for the 12th Laferla Sette Giugno Cruise

The 12th Laferla Sette Giugno Cruise has attracted a record participation for next month’s race, organisers announced.

It is said there is strength in numbers. This is truly so whether talking about matters related to sport or business.

In June of 2013, on the occasion of the Sette Giugno public holiday, the Malta Cruising Club introduced a four-day all-family relaxing sailing break to Sicily.

This launch edition saw a modest fleet of nine participants with Pozzallo being the Sicilian destination.

The event immediate caught the members’ attention, as the number of participants gradually increased to 13, 15, 16, 19, reaching 32 boats – with 100 skippers and ‘crew’ – by the seventh edition of 2019.

Unfortunately, the impetus of fun and success of the event were disrupted for two editions, 2020 and 2021, because of COVID-19.

The eighth edition, that of 2022, saw 28 boats on the Cruise with 99 skippers and crew.

Here, it was realised that the growing number of boats on the Cruise was creating berthing difficulty in Pozzallo.

Thus, while retaining the strong, friendly relationship, built over the years, between the Malta Cruising Club and the Comune di Pozzallo as well as the Pozzallo section of the Lega Navale Italiana, the Cruise had to find another Sicilian destination.

So, from the 2023 edition, the sailing event moved to Porto Turistico Marina di Ragusa, where berthing space was more available.

The title sponsors of the 2026 edition, for the second year running, are Laferla Insurance and the official title of the cruise is Laferla Sette Giugno Cruise to Marina di Ragusa.

This year’s event, the 12th in the series, will be a special one for it will be a record edition: 52 participants, 50 sailing boats of which three are large catamarans and two power boats, with over 150 skippers and their crew to enjoy a most varied all-family sailing break, from June 4 and 7.

The participating fleet includes a wide variety of vessels, ranging from 26-foot sailing yachts to larger cruising yachts of over 50 feet.

This year, boats will leave all at the same time bracket between 6.30am and 7am.

A welcome reception on the Pontoon awaits the participants on arrival at Marina di Ragusa on Thursday evening.

Two other shore activities this year are a visit to a Sicilian vineyard and an official Laferla dinner on Saturday evening.

As shown in the past three editions, the  Porto Turistico Marina di Ragusa administrators are extending their fullest co-operation to the Malta Cruising Club to make sure that the event is a success.
