Robert Micallef has submitted his nomination for the Malta FA presidential elections that will be held next month.
Micallef just managed to submit his nomination before the Malta FA deadline which expired at midnight on Sunday.
The Santa Lucia FC president is the second candidate to put his name forward for the MFA top job that will be decided in an election during the local governing body’s General Assembly that will be held on March 15.
Bjorn Vassallo had confirmed his intention of submitting his nomination for a second term in office during the last MFA General Assembly held last year.
Former Birkirkara FC striker Ridha Dardouri had initially announced in an interview with the Times of Malta his intention to bid for the top job at the Malta Football Association.
However, the Tunisian-born businessman had a change of heart and told the Times of Malta that he decided not to submit his nomination and support Micallef’s bid to become MFA president.
“Yes I can confirm that I didn’t submit my nomination,” Dardouri told the Times of Malta on Sunday night.
“The reason for that is very simple. After very long discussions and consultations these last few days, I have decided to not contest but to support Robert Micallef
“I believe that definitely he’s the right person for the position. We have the same vision and same goals for the best interest of the Maltese football.”
Micallef is an experienced football administrator in Maltese football as prior to his spell as president of Santa Lucia FC he had also been at the helm of Marsaxlokk FC.
In the past few years, he has become a key official among the Premier League administrators as he has also served as chairman of the Malta Premier League standing committee before this body was transformed to the Malta Premier League.
He is also a member of the Malta Executive Committee where he has been serving for the past three years.
Micallef has great experience in sports management as he boasts a BSc in Sports Studies, a Masters in Entrepreneurship as well as a FIFA Diploma in Club Management.
