The Maltese Police Force is investigating a case of corruption in Maltese football that involves an official of a Premier League club, the Times of Malta can confirm.
No specific details of the persons involved can be divulged at the moment concerning the ongoing investigations that are being carried out by the Malta Police Force in collaboration with the Integrity Department of the Malta Football Association.
However, the Times of Malta can confirm that the official involved comes from one of the top teams in the Premier League and is being investigated after he approached a player of an opposing team to convince him to throw the match involving the two teams involved.
The investigation of the case have been ongoing for several weeks now with the police working hard to gather information on the case.
Informed sources have told the Times of Malta that the police have in their possession several recordings of telephone conversations that are related directly to this case.
Contacted by the Times of Malta, Malta FA integrity officer Herman Mula confirmed that the investigations on this case are ongoing and are being led by the Police Force in parallel with the local governing body of football.
“During these kind of negotiations, the Malta FA Integrity Office works closely with the Police Force who head the investigation,” Mula told the Times of Malta.
“This is an important point to stress, as many think that the MFA Integrity Office and the Police Force hold separate investigations. But that is not the right way to approach such sensitive cases.
“It’s a joint effort between the Malta FA and Police Force as that is the only way to ensure you can successfully investigate such matters.”
