Nicolai Bonello continued his steady rise in reaching new marks in the pole vault event on Saturday when the young athlete managed to improve his national standard once more when he managed to reach the height of 4.80 metres.
It is a remarkable achievement for the La Salle Athletics Club athlete who up to two months ago his best leap in this highly-technical discipline was that of 4.65m.
However, his hard work and dedication continues to bear the right dividends for Bonello who spearheaded by his coach Jivko Jetchev and Athletics Malta technical director Mario Bonello he has managed to arrive where no other Maltese pole vaulter has ever reached.
On Saturday, Bonello made his intentions clear right from the start, clearing 4.40m, 4.60m, 4.70m (national record) and, again on his first attempt, the La Salle Athletics athlete cleared 4.80m.
Buoyed by his latest achievement he tried to set even higher standards and went close on his next attempts to go past the 4.90m.
There is no doubt that Bonello will continue with his mantra of hard work and dedication in his attempt to reach his next stage of his career – jump higher than the five-metre barrier.
