Training programmes will enhance the development of Maltese players on the island
Phoenix Handball Club Malta has announced a transformative partnership with SL Benfica, reinforcing its dedication to local youth handball development.
This landmark collaboration, kicked-off last week with an intensive training camp for 50 Phoenix Handball players.
This group comprised both boys and girls between ages of 10 to 17.
Two SL Benfica coaches, Carlos Garcia u Pedro Jeronimo were in Malta to conduct this training camp. This event was held at the Ħamrun Handball Pavilion from July 2 and 4.
This initiative marks a a pivotal step in the Phoenix Handball Club’s broader strategy for international collaboration.
Phoenix Club president Orlando Bonnici said: “It is an important milestone not only for our club but also for the local handball scene. We are honoured to be collaborating with a club that has a vast experience in international sports.
“We are excited about this collaboration with SL Benfica as we believe it will give opportunities to future athletes and also to show that handball can be taken up professionally by promising players even beyond our shores”
Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known as Benfica, is a professional handball team based in Lisbon, Portugal.
Benfica play in the top tier domestic league, Andebol 1, and hold home matches at the Pavilhão da Luz No 2.
Since its inception in 1932, Benfica have won seven Portuguese League titles, six Portuguese Cups, two Portuguese League Cups, and seven Portuguese Super Cups.
Internationally, Benfica won the EHF European League in 2021–22, becoming the first Portuguese club to win the competition.
