Maltese swimmer places second in heat
Kyle Micallef came agonisingly close to setting a new national record in the 50 metres freestyle heats at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.
The Maltese swimmer lined up in the fifth heat and was off to a storming start.
Micallef touched home in second place in a time of 22.89 seconds.
The Maltese swimmerâs time was a mere 0.09 seconds slower than his national record he set in Belgrade in June this year.
Fijiâs David Young won the race in a time of 22.71 seconds. Nigeriaâs Tobi Sijuade finished behind Micallef in a time of 23.34 seconds.
Russian swimmer Evgenii Somov, who was racing under a neutral flag, placed fourth in a time of 23.43.
The other swimmers in the race are St Vincent and the Grenadinesâ Alex Joachim (23.59), Syria Alaa Maso (23.90), Zambiaâs Damien Shamamb (24.09) and Malawiâs Filipe Gomes (24.11).e
Despite his strong performance Micallef failed to make it to the semi-finals of the 50m free heats, thus his experience at the Paris Olympics came to an end on Thursday.
