A late Valeria Villegas penalty handed Mġarr United a crucial win over Swieqi United in the women’s league.

The Greens have now moved into second place on 30 points, trailing leaders Swieqi by just one point.

Mġarr had Argentine forward Luz Hernandez making her maiden appearance for the club, having joined during this winter transfer window.

Swieqi’s defeat means Hibernians can reclaim top spot should they beat Lija Athletic on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, the Paolites announced the signature of defender Georgiana Mifsud, previously on the books of Raiders and Valletta.

In addition, champions Birkirkara have the opportunity to climb above Swieqi with a victory over Mtarfa, on Saturday.
