Mġarr women bring in Argentine forward, face leaders Swieqi as league resumes

The women’s league resumes following the Christmas and New Year break with a crucial final matchday of the regular season before the competition splits into the Top Four and Bottom Four phases.

All eyes will be on the showdown between Swieqi United and Mġarr United, as the league leaders take on the fourth-placed side in a high-stakes encounter.

Swieqi, sitting at the summit with 31 points, aim to extend their lead, while Mġarr, on 27 points, look to close the gap ahead of the Top Four commitments.

Adding intrigue to the clash, Mġarr have bolstered their squad with the signing of Argentine forward Luz Hernández, who brings top-flight experience from Argentina, having played for clubs like Estudiantes and Platense.

Swieqi head into the match fresh from an 8-0 victory over Mtarfa, with new signing Asana Alhassan, a 2006-born Ghanaian U-20 international, among the scorers.

Meanwhile, Mġarr secured a convincing 6-0 win over Lija Athletic before the break with four goals recorded by Yulya Carella, the league’s best scorer with 16 goals together with Hailey Russell of San Ġwann.

Elsewhere, second-placed Hibernians face Lija, while reigning champions Birkirkara take on Mtarfa.
