Dutch women’s coach Jonker to leave after Euro 2025

Dutch women’s football coach Andries Jonker will step down after the upcoming Women’s Euro 2025, football officials announced Friday, saying it was “time for a new phase”.

Jonker, 62, was appointed in August 2022 and steered the flagging Netherlands to a last-minute 1-0 victory over Iceland, to qualify for the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand the following year.

He stepped into the job after Mark Parsons was sacked following the team’s last-eight exit to France during Euro 2022, when the Dutch failed to defend their 2017 title.

“Andries Jonker’s contract as national coach of the Dutch national women’s team will expire after the approaching European Championship and will not be extended,” the Royal Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) said.

“After an evaluation it was decided that after a special World Cup in New Zealand and Australia with a place in the quarter finals and elimination against the eventual world champion — and the upcoming European Championship in Switzerland, it was time for a new phase,” the KNVB said in a statement.

During his tenure “Jonker… has created a top sporting environment, in which new players have been given an international chance,” KNVB football director Nigel de Jong said.

“The game has improved over the last two-and-half years and we are hoping for a successful conclusion with the European Championship,” he said in the statement.

The Netherlands face tough competition in Switzerland in July in Group D, which also includes France and England.

The team is currently ranked 10th in the world, behind world champions Spain, the top-tiered United States and England.
