A second-half Benjamin Sesko penalty steered RB Leipzig to a 1-0 win at home to Wolfsburg and a place in the German Cup semi-finals on Wednesday.
After a dour first half, Wolfsburg’s Mohamed Amoura rattled the crossbar minutes after the interval.
The hosts stepped it up a gear shortly after, Sesko heading a David Raum cross wide from close range before grabbing the only goal of the game.
Sesko’s cross hit the arm of Wolfsburg’s Kilian Fischer, which was only slightly away from his body, with the referee pointing immediately to the spot.
The Slovenian stepped up and dispatched the ball low and to the left. He has now scored in each of the three German Cup games he has played this season.
Germany defender Raum told Sky Germany he “went up to a few of the Wolfsburg players and said ‘sorry’ after the penalty decision.
“I’m also a defender, I know how it is—sometimes the referee decides that way. It’s the luck of the game and we’ll take it.”
Leipzig, who have won two of the past three German Cups, will face either holders Bayer Leverkusen, three-time winners Stuttgart or third-division Arminia Bielefeld.
Bielefeld, who surprised six-time winners Werder Bremen 2-1 on Tuesday, are the only side remaining in the competition never to have lifted the German Cup.
Bayern Munich, who have lifted the trophy a record 20 times, are already out of the competition, as are Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, both of whom have won five German Cups.
The draw for the semi-finals will be made on Sunday. This year’s final will be played in Berlin on May 24.
