Swieqi United took a major step toward securing their first-ever Assikura women’s league title after edging past Mġarr United with a narrow 1-0 victory.
Karima Abdulai was the hero of the match, scoring the decisive goal that strengthened Swieqi’s position at the top of the standings.
With just two matches remaining, the Owls now enjoy a five-point lead at the summit, making them firm favorites to lift the trophy.
Meanwhile, Birkirkara moved into second place after a narrow 1-0 win over Hibernians.
Izabella Camilleri was the difference-maker, scoring the only goal of the match in the first half to help her side leapfrog their direct rivals. With this result, Birkirkara now sit on 40 points, while Hibernians and Mġarr are level on 39.
Swieqi’s title ambitions could be realized in the next matchday. A victory against Birkirkara would mathematically secure the championship, while even a draw – provided Hibernians and Mġarr also share the spoils – would be enough to seal the deal.
However, a defeat would reopen the title race, setting up a dramatic final day showdown.
This latest triumph further highlights the impact of Dorianne Theuma, who is making waves in her debut season as a senior team coach.
Having recently been named Assikura Coach of the Round, Theuma’s transition from player to manager has been seamless, as she continues to lead Swieqi toward an unprecedented success.
