MPL condemns violent scenes, welcomes MFA probe
The Malta FA announced that it will launch an investigation into the deplorable scenes witnessed in Saturday’s 360 Sports Malta Premier League match between Żabbar St Patrick’s and Mosta at the Gozo Stadium.
Mosta came back from a goal down to score two injury-time goals to secure a 2-1 win over Żabbar that enabled them to secure a place in the Top Six and condemn their opponents to Bottom Six football in the second part of the Closing Round.
However, the match was marred by ugly scenes as players and officials from both sides were involved in skirmishes that started after Mosta scored their second goal and continued after the final whistle, with the police present at the Gozo Stadium struggling to bring back order.
In a statement, the Malta FA announced that it will appoint a Disciplinary Inspector who will investigate the deplorable scenes witnessed on Saturday.
“The Malta Football Association is informing that it will be appointing and Disciplinary Inspector to investigate the deplorable incidents that happened at the end of the match between St Patrick and Mosta from the 360 Sports Malta Premier,” the MFA said.
“The Malta Football Association will not let anyone dampen the image of Maltese football and the moments of joy experienced by genuine football fans who behave well in our stadiums.
“The Association will also be analysing the organisation and the security plan adopted by the organisers for the said match so that it will make sure that everything conformed to the health and safety regulations.”
The Malta Premier League also issued a statement condemning the violent incidents during the Mosta-Żabbar SP match.
“The Malta Premier League condemns without reservations the incidents that happened at the end of the match between Mosta and Żabbar St Patrick,” the MPL said.
“Without entering in the merit on what happened, the MPL would like to draw the attention that from the information that we have no supporter was involved during the incident.
“Moreso, the behaviour of the hundreds of fans that attended the first three matches in Gozo, was very good.
“The MPL welcomes every investigation that was announced to happen by the Malta Football Association.”
The MPL thanked the security members present for the game as well as the Ministry for Gozo and the GFA that helped so that the Gozo Weekender would be a success.
“The MPL augurs that the remaining matches will be played in a serene atmosphere.”

The Malta Premier is currently hosting its final MatchDay from the Opening Phase of the Closing Round at the Gozo Stadium, where teams are fighting for a place in the Top Six.
Another two matches are scheduled for Sunday when Birkirkara take on Sliema Wanderers and Marsaxlokk face Melita.
The Gozo Weekender will come to a close on Monday when Ħamrun Spartans will be up against Naxxar Lions.
