Jared Micallef sets new 800m Malta record in Australia nationals

Dillon Cassar places 40th in Half-Marathon at European Road Running Championships

Jared Micallef set a new national record in the 800m with a time of 1:46.08 during the Australian National Championships held in Perth last weekend.

Racing from lane 2, Micallef placed fifth in a competitive nine-man final, which was won by Peter Bol in a new Australian record of 1:43.79.

Micallef has his sights set on this September’s World Championships in Tokyo, with the qualifying standard for the 800m set at 1:44.50.

In the same event, teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout continued to turn heads by clocking a wind-assisted 19.84 seconds to win the Australian 200m title.


Meanwhile, Maltese athletes put on a commendable showing at the European Road Running Championships 2025 in Leuven.

Dillon Cassar battled warm conditions to complete the Half Marathon in 1:07:45, finishing 37th overall.

Other Maltese participants included Luke Micallef – 10K in 30:34, Lisa Bezzina – 10K in 38:06 and Simon Spiteri – Marathon in a personal best of 2:23:47.
