Balzan’s 14-year spell in the Maltese Premier League came to an end after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Naxxar Lions on the final day of the Bottom Six round.
Despite needing a win to secure a relegation play-off against Melita, Balzan fell short, sealing their relegation to the Challenge League.
Winners of the FA Trophy in 2018/2019, Balzan were under immense pressure heading into this fixture, knowing that only three points would keep their top-flight hopes alive. However, it was George Vella’s organised and resolute Naxxar side who left the pitch with their Premier League status intact, having collected an impressive 10 points from their Bottom Six fixtures.
Naxxar will now face Melita in a crucial relegation decider against Melita, on Friday.
Balzan came flying out of the blocks and nearly took the lead inside the first six minutes. Udoyen Akpan found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Matthew Debono but saw his close-range lob blocked smartly by the Naxxar custodian.
Despite their urgency, Balzan’s attacking efforts lacked precision. Crosses into the box were easily dealt with by the Naxxar backline, and long-range efforts from Victor Llorens and Marcus Grima failed to trouble Debono.
Dimeji Awosanya squandered another promising opportunity past the 20-minute mark, firing over the bar after being picked out by Benjamin Hili inside the area. At the other end, Hugo Coelho came close to catching Balzan off guard, his effort narrowly missing the target. Just before half-time, Naxxar nearly snatched the lead, but Danilo Golovic denied Edson Farias with a strong save.
The second half began with a golden chance for Balzan. Akpan was brought down by Nikolai Micallef in the area, and referee Trustin Farrugia Cann pointed to the spot. Skipper Jan Busuttil stepped up, but Debono guessed right and parried the penalty, keeping the score level and dealing a psychological blow to the Balzan side.
Naxxar capitalised on the missed opportunity minutes later. A well-executed throw-in routine saw Maicon drill a low shot past Golovic to put the Lions ahead.
With relegation looming, Balzan coach Andrew Cohen made a bold tactical shift. On the 70th minute, he substituted goalkeeper Golovic for Dylan Ciappara, allowing him to introduce a foreign outfield player in forward Isaac Westendorf. Busuttil, having missed the penalty, was the player sacrificed.
Awosanya, wasteful earlier, finally made his mark five minutes from time. He latched onto a loose ball and drilled a powerful low shot beyond Debono to give Balzan a lifeline.
Pushing forward in the final moments, Balzan threw everything at Naxxar, but the Lions stood firm. Even with five minutes of added time, Balzan could not break through, and the final whistle confirmed their relegation.
As Naxxar celebrated survival, Balzan were left to reflect on missed chances and the end of a 14-year era in the Premier League.
