Athletics Malta announced that Aldrin Cassar tendered his resignation as association president, citing personal reasons.
The decision comes just a couple of weeks before the governing body of athletics is represented by a sizeable group of athletes in the Games of the Small States of Europe that will be held in Andorra between May 26 and 31.
Cassar had been at the helm of Athletics Malta for the past three years following the departure of his predecessor Andy Grech.
“Athletics Malta announces that its president, Aldrin Cassar, has formally tendered his resignation, citing personal reasons,” the statement said.
“The resignation is set to take effect on 30th June 2025, allowing for the smooth handling of ongoing matters and a proper transition of responsibilities within the Council.
“The organisation expresses its sincere gratitude to the President for his dedication, leadership, and service to Maltese athletics throughout his tenure.
“Further updates regarding the transition process, including the announcement of an Extraordinary General Meeting for the election of a new president, will be communicated in due course.”
Cassar has worked for several years in the athletics community having previously served as secretary general.
As an athlete, Cassar played football for more than two decades in the Maltese and Gozitan football leagues where he won several honours with Victoria Hotspurs and Mosta.
As an administrator, besides his role with Athletics Malta he also took the job of Secretary-General of the Malta Employees Sports Association.
