Brazilian forward pens two-year deal with Maroons
Gżira United have completed a major transfer coup as they start to strengthen the squad for he 2025/2026 360 Sport Malta Premier, days after the 2024/2025 campaign came to an end.
The Maroons announced the return of Brazilian forward Maxuell, league top scorer with 23 goals at Birkirkara. In addition, he was also named as the Malta FA best foreign player of the season.
Maxuell, 33, donned the colours of Gżira between 2020/2021 and 2022/2023, netting 40 goals in 68 games.
Club president Sharlon Pace, who earlier on Sunday had posted what looked like a casual photo with Maxuell – his former player, pointed out that this acquisition is a statement that Gżira United want to be competitive again in the club’s statement.
In fact, Gżira had a low key 2024/2025 season having played in the Bottom Six of the Closing Round while failing to qualify to European football.
Technical Director Marlon Galea, who left Floriana to return to Gżira, added “We are all thrilled with this signing.
“Maxuell is an amazing striker and a pitch warrior, and when this opportunity came as possibility, we concluded the deal in 30 minutes. On a personal note I’m very happy to work again with Samu (Maxuell). He is one of us.”
