Maltese swimmers failed to win a medal on the final day of competition at the Selleders Sports Complex in La Vella.

After the exploits of Sasha Gatt and Michela Portelli on Thursday, one hoped the team could add to their tally of six medals – two gold, three silver and one bronze. But it was not to be as Portelli and Kyle Micallef missed out on a bronze medal by a few fractions of a second.

Michella Portelli came up just short of a third placing in the 50 metres fly when touching home in 28.74 seconds… a mere 0.8 of a second from Johanna Gudnundsdottir, of Iceland, who finished third.

The gold medal was won by Cypriot swimmer Kalia Antoniou in 26.80 seconds.

Fourth placing

Zoe Cawsey also finished fourth in the 50 metres backstroke when clocking 30.11, a mere 0.08 seconds slower than bronze medallist Jacqueline Banky, of Luxembourg, who clocked 30.03.

The gold medal was won by Cypriot Antoniou in 29.27.

Cawsey had another fourth placing this time in the 50 metres breaststroke final when she completed the distance in 33.25.

The gold medal was won by Birgitta Ingolfsdottir, of Iceland, in 32.46 and was followed by San Marino’s Elisa Celli (32.89) and Maria Erokhina, of Cyprus, who clocked 32.98.

In the men’s competition, Sean Wareing was eighth in 29.28 seconds, with the gold medal won by Rufus Bernhardt with a time of 25.66. Kyle Micallef placed eighth in the 50 metres fly with a time of 25.15 with the gold medal going to Milos Milenkovic, of Montenegro, in 23.78.

Malta wrapped up its commitments in the 4×100 metres Mixed Medley relay and finished in a disappointing eighth place with a time of 4.11.99.

Iceland took the gold medal in 3:54.91.
