The Malta rugby sevens secured the bronze medal after defeating Luxembourg 21-12 in the third-place play-off.
After the disappointment of missing a place in the final, the men’s team bounced back in style to dispose of Luxembourg.
Zarrin Galea was Malta’s hero when he scored two tries, with the other coming from Josh Gatt. The other points came from Chris Dudman’s shoes as he converted two of the three tries.
The result is a firm response from the men’s team, who had missed out on a medal in the home Games held in 2023.
Earlier in the day, the men’s sevens team missed out on a place in the gold medal final when they lost to Monaco 26-21.
The Monegasque side showed their superiority despite having three players yellow-carded during the match.
Monaco took an early 7-0 lead but Malta fought back and tries from Brookly Hardaker and Zarrin Galea turned the match in their favour, with Chris Dudman converting both to give them a 14-7 lead.
However, Monaco showed their quality when scoring three tries without reply to surge into a 26-14 lead.
Zarrin Galea scored his second try of the match, which was converted by Dudman, but that was as good as it got as Monaco held on for the win.
